Fiona McMillan PhD BSc

I am a science communicator with more than twenty years’ experience producing high quality written scientific content for academia, industry, the non-profit sector, and popular media.

I have written for COSMOS magazineAustralian Geographic online, and ABC Science Online. I am also currently a science contributor at Forbes.com. My writing has been included in the Best Australian Science Writing anthology in 2015, 2016 and 2018. I was awarded runner up for the 2016 Bragg UNSW Press Prize for Science Writing.

I have a strong background in science, which includes a B.Sc. in physics, a PhD in biophysics, and post-doctoral research in structural biology. This path took me from the study of distant stars to the fine-tuned architecture of proteins. I’ve clocked time at telescopes, lab benches, and the occasional particle accelerator. It’s been an interesting ride, and it didn’t stop there.

I also have several years’ experience in the biotechnology industry, where I gained expertise in business development and project management.

I have a great deal of experience communicating scientific research to the general public via online articles, press releases, and other relevant media. I also work one-on-one with scientists and research students to prepare scientific papers and funding proposals. Moreover, I present seminars and workshops on effective science writing, including how to write journal articles and successful grant proposals.

I’ve also been known to unintentionally climb the occasional mountain.
